Sujit Choudhry Discusses Threats To Free Nations

Recently, there are countries that are facing threats to their democratic order. And one constitutional expert is now pointing out exactly what threats are being faced by each individual nation. That expert, Sujit Choudhry, has been examining what makes democracies work for decades.

Mr. Choudhry recently authored a book called “Constitutional Democracies in Crisis?” ( .  The book is highlighting a trend where more and more nations are facing a threat to their democracies. And one of those countries happens to be the home of the free world – the United States.

Highlighting one tweet, in particular, Mr. Choudhry pointed out how former Attorney General Eric Holder called for peaceful protests if President Trump would happen to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Mr. Choudhry pointed out how unusual it was for a law enforcement officer to call for a non-legal solution to a constitutional crisis. And the fact that peaceful protests are a “self-enforcing way” for citizens to ensure a free democracy.

Going further, Mr. Choudhry said that one of the great self-governing mechanisms in a free democracy is the fact that the Head of State has to face term-limits. In many dictatorships, the head of a state will suspend elections in order to seize power. For more of his views, click on

One of the places where Sujit Choudhry sees a threat to democracy is in Poland where the far-right Law and Justice Party or the PiS has taken over the legislature in 2015. Since then, Mr. Choudhry believes that the PiS has been working to tear down the constitutional law in the Eastern European country.

Sujit Choudhry is the Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley – School of Law. He also served as the Dean of the Law School. For several decades, Mr. Choudhry has been an expert in constitutional law. In addition to his position at Berkley, Mr. Choudhry is also the Director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, which helps guide policymakers on constitutional law. As countries face new political and ideological challenges, Sujit Choudhry will continue to inform and guide policymakers on the workings of a constitutional democracy.
