Everyone Deserves the Right to be Human!!

Why is there need for immigrants to have someone to advocate for them? Shouldn’t people be civil to one another just because? Do people know the difference between animals and humans? These questions should not arise but they do everyday across the globe.

People are simply not being treated fairly therefore there are a variety of different activists who have formed groups to help fight for justice. Many feel that the “system” isn’t created equal, as it really states but what do we really know? I will do my best to provide information to break down exactly what these groups try to express to the world the need to be heard as well as making a positive change. Migrant or Immigration Rights almost have less of a voice where government is concerned. There are two major organizations who have been advocating for them for years. One is ACLU, which stands for American Civil Liberties Union for Immigration Rights and the other is OHCHR, which stands for Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, under the United Nations umbrella.

These heros have made a really big impact on assisting immigrants from all over the world who have come to the United States for an economic and financial growth. They have created marches, raised million of dollars in fundraisers and have gotten the attention of government officials to make a change.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey know all too well about the rights of human beings being challenged or taken away. They are two journalists who were covering a story concerning the sheriff of a county in Arizona. In the middle of the night, they were taken out of their homes and jailed for exposing the truth about what was going on at that time.

Not only were their lives put at risk, but their sources and online users, who have read their stories, we’re almost exposed due to subpoenas being demanded from the grand jury.

They fought very hard to protect everyone and fought back in the Supreme Court. They were awarded $3.75 million dollars which was used to fund others civil, human and migrant rights. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund will advocate for everyone who has freedom of speech and civil participation throughout Arizona, including the Mexican border.

The American Immigration Council is an important nonprofit that protects the rights of immigrants to America. They promote humane governmental policies and help immigrants achieve justice when their rights are trampled. While this organization is headquartered in Washington D.C. they are also active in a number of cases in Arizona. They work with immigration lawyers so that they remain aware of the issues that immigrants have.

Promise Arizona is another very important nonprofit supported by the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This organization was founded in 2010 after the passage of Arizona’s SB 1070. This law is the strictest and broadest measure against illegal immigration in the nation.

It has been used to racially profile people and turning them over to federal officers for deportation. Promise Arizona is an organization fighting to have this law repealed as they regard it as an unfair attack on Hispanic people whether they are American citizens or not. The Arizona Justice Project has as its mission defending Arizona inmates who claim innocence yet have no means to fight the charges against them. They provide representation for these people including those who were wrongfully convicted or were juvenile defendants sentenced to excessively long prison sentences or even life terms. They also help inmates that are suffering from life-threatening illnesses who are received poor care while imprisoned as well as those who are not being treated for their PTSD symptoms.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was established by two journalists, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. They had written an article about the notorious Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio which included information from a grand jury proceedings case. One night they were both arrested and hauled into jail so that the police could try to discover who they had obtained this information from regarding the sheriff.

Both Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey sued the county of Maricopa over their illegal treatment by the county and Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Both of these journalists had spent parts of their professional careers defending their First Amendment rights against illegal actions of the government. Eventually, the case ended up before the United States Court of Appeals who ruled in their favor.

The case against Lacey and Larkin resulted in a settlement of $3.75 million being awarded to them. They decided to donate the money they received as a settlement which resulted in the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. They have helped countless other people defend their rights in the state of Arizona regardless of citizenship, race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation.

Starting the Frontera Foundation and Front Page Confidential

On October 18, 2017, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin [co-founders of Phoenix Times and Village Voice Media] were arrested. Their arrests were without probable cause, which violated the two co-founder’s First Amendment right. Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, called for the arrests. The sheriff is publically known for his overt and careless discrimatory actions against illegal immigrants. Lavey and Larkin are commonly known for bashing Arpaio on this matter in their publications. The two co-founders would publish a piece in Phoenix Times that would spark extreme disgust in Arpaio that would cause him to act with the arrest. In the article, the content would include a negative statement about the Maricopa County grand jury. It would state, that Maricopa County’s “grand jury subpoenas targeted the paper’s writers, the editors and its readers”. The prosecution would rub one judge the wrong way and they would call it, “highly inappropriate”.

Lacey and Larkin would receive $3.7 million as a settlement for the wrongful arrests. The two would start an organization with the money, called, Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. They would start this organization to support the many Latinos and Hispanics who are discriminated against by law enforcement and public officials. The organization provides grants to migrant-rights organizations throughout Arizona. In addition to starting this organization, the two would also start a website, called, The Front Page Confidential. This site covers the many issues of America involving the First Amendment. Titles of some of the articles found on the website are,”Gersh v. Anglin: Can the First Amendment Shelter a Troll Storm?”;”It’s Daniels v. Donald in Scuffle Over First Amendment Right to Dish Details About Doing Deed”; First Amendment Scholar Erwin Chemerinsky Lays Down the Law About Free Speech on Campus and many other related titles. Thor Halvorssen Discuses Socialism

Thor Halvorssen was recently interviewed on Fox Business Network’s show “The Intelligence Report with Trish Regan” to discuss his unique perspective on socialism and its potential pitfalls when implemented by certain types of governments. Halvorssen is the president and face of the Human Rights Foundation, an organization dedicated to advocating for the protection of human rights all of the world and with headquarters in New York City. Halvorssen has a particularly unique perspective based on his professional and personal experiences with what has been a particularly hot topic in light of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign — democratic socialism.

Halvorssen was asked by Fox to break down the reality of how socialism is typically implemented around the world, as opposed to how the idea of socialism is presented in textbooks and discussed by academics. Halvorssen explains to viewers that socialism has the potential to be a worthy pursuit in principle, it has the danger to empower national governments to reach too far in taking away rights and properties from their citizens. Halvorssen says that the reason socialism tends to lead to the central government controlling too much is that it involves a type of redistribution of resources. If there are not adequate controls, such as checks and balances, a central government can turn into an authoritarian regime under the guise of adopting democratic socialist principles to apparently help the more underprivileged classes of society.

Halvorssen was also asked in the interview about which democratic candidate he intends to support for the U.S. presidential race. Given Thor Halvorssen’s inherent concerns about dangers of socialist principles, it may come as a bit of a surprise to viewers that he supports Senator Sanders for president. In fact, Halvorssen admitted that he contributed the maximum amount allowed under law to Senator Sanders’ presidential campaign. Halvorssen says that even though he may not be a strong advocate of socialism, he has grave concerns about Hillary Clinton and her ties to various dictators around the world personally and politically, which Halvorssen says could be a serious hurdle to his central mission of supporting international human rights.

Thor Halvorssen about Bernie Sanders

Thor Halvorssen was interviewed the other day on not only his own views about Socialism but about Bernie Sanders’ alleged desire to change this county into Socialism. Mr. Halvorssen has mentioned many interesting points used not only in the potential Presidential Candidate’s debate on how he wants to change this country but also from his own family’s experience.

Mr. Halvorssen has mentioned that Mr. Sanders’ opponent has taken monies from dictators of other countries who have even gone as far as to ban the celebration of Christmas. This point is very interesting since taking monies from these types of leaders puts the U.S.A. at the mercy of these dictators. There are also dictators of other countries who have banned the usage of Skype, closely monitor the usage of the Internet of private citizens, and record private phone conversations. Mr. Halvorssen mentioned that the opponent has taken monies from these types of dictators which puts the U.S.A. in a very precarious position. This is one major point to think about before casting the vote in a primary and major election.

Another point that Mr. Halvorssen brought up briefly was his donation to the Sanders’ campaign.

Mr. Halvorssen mentioned about disadvantages to Socialism including that form of government being compared to Communism. Mr. Thor Halvorssen also mentioned that free markets are a must which cannot happen in Socialism as well as the fact that there will be shortages of needed resources. This is also an interesting point to think about.

Mr. Halvorssen mentioned about how the government is run in Venezuela and how the private citizens there are struggling. It was interesting to see the video which is played on YouTube.

Mr. Halvorssen, founder of the Human Rights Foundation,  mentioned briefly about his jail experience in another country as well as his other family experiences. The potential candidates running this year for President prove to be all very interesting in their different ways and debates are going in many different directions. There have been public statements made about Mr. Bernie Sanders to be in a Socialistic view. However, many of his supporters state that he is very fair and not a Socialist. The private citizens of the world just have to follow all the speeches and debates and see for themselves who would be the best.
